2020 Jolliffe Cabernet Sauvignon

I first met Mark in the Cowaramup Bowls Club in 2017 and managed to convince him to sell me some Cabernet in 2019 for the first time. The vineyard is in the heart of Wilyabrup and is well established, being dry grown over the famous ironstone gravels and clay of Wilyabrup Valley. The vines produce small, compact bunches that show exceptional concentration of flavour.

The Cabernet was fermented in small, open top fermenters and hand plunged daily. After 21 days on skins, the wine was basket pressed to a mixture of new (33%) and old French barriques. The wine spent close to 18 months in barrel before being hand bottled.

Mike Bennie:
“Trim, taut and terrific, medium weight red wine of distinct Maggie River character with blue fruits, bay leaf, sea spray going on, albeit this one has a little savoury undertone too. Good concentration for mid-weight, flows beautifully, long, fine, tense with tannins and perky with saline acidity. A sense of succulence and ripe fruit, a lick of chocolate, yes, too, but all this plays well into this fuller, detailed expression. Lovely, lush, yum.”
